One of the Biggest Illegal Numbers Game Operations In Cotabato City, Busted

COTABATO CITY – Mayor Japal J. Guiani, Jr. headed another operation against illegal numbers game betting booths in the city. Along with other last two paraphernalia, a document identified as a "payroll" were confiscated during the raid.

The payroll contained significant information as to the people who are given their "SOP's" only to protect the betting booths from raids and full closure. The long list includes some names of members of the local police and other local authorities. The document also reveals that the operations of this illegal numbers game not only run in Cotabato City but extends to the whole of Region 12, some parts of ARMM Region, and the province of Davao del Sur.

"Malawak ang network and connection ng grupong ito. Hindi lang ito simple operator ng last two. They are a big syndicate operating in the city. Nakikita pa natin sa document na hawak natin ang weekly and daily SOPs at may mga cellular phone numbers pa", Mayor Guiani says.

The betting booths and the identified office of the operator were the ones searched by the authorities. Aside from the "payroll", they were also able to confiscate other paraphernalia like facsimile machines, telephones, ledgers, calculators, receipts, and tally sheets. With the number of booths searched and the wide scope of the "last two" games, the Mayor believes that this illegal business involves millions of pesos everyday.

"Doon sa mga pinasok na area, maraming stalls. Iba iba ang mga operators pero hindi natin nahuli dahil nakapagtago sila agad. At yung iba naman ay nakatakas na bago pa kami nakarating sa lugar. Para bang alam na nilang may mag-ooperate against them", the Mayor added.

The building where the betting booths were located is owned by a certain Edwin Cang. He will be invited by the local police to get vital information regarding the proliferation of betting booths in his building. And if situation warrants, charges shall be filed against whoever shall be indentified as operator and financier of this illegal business.

City Police Director PS/Supt. Roberto T. Badian also added that necessary charges will be filed against those police officers identified in the confiscated documents who are accordingly receiving SOPs in the form of cash from the last two stalls.

"Sinabi na natin noon pa, kinakailangan lang talaga ang ebidensya. Mayroon tayo ngayon ditto, ihahain na natin ang necessary case", Badian says.

Local authorities also admit that these operations are still not enough to neutralize the operations of the illegal numbers game in the city but Badian assures that his men will continue the drive against these prohibited activities.

City Mayor Guiani also gave out a warning to the other financiers of these last two and last three games that this will be a continuing drive and that he, together with the local authorities, will be visiting the identified people behind this illegal activity.
