Thousands join simultaneous hand washing in Cotabato City

22549671_1496782733691064_6526820147680110763_nAn estimated 5,000 participants joined in the Global Hand Washing Day celebration in Cotabato City, Tuesday.

Despite the bad weather that the city has been experiencing, day care pupils, elementary and high school students, parents,

and teachers still participated in the simultaneous hand washing activity as the city aimed for a world record with the establishment of a two-kilometer long temporary hand washing facility. The ‘tippy taps’ stretched from the People’s Palace up to the Sero Central Elementary School along Sinsuat Avenue.

Together with their partners from the UNICEF, CFSI, Samaritan’s Purse, the Rotary Clubs of Cotabato, the Liga ng mga Barangay, other civic organizations, city government officials and employees also joined in the remarkable activity. In his speech during the opening program, City Vice Mayor Graham Dumama commended the efforts of all the stakeholders for the successful conduct of the event.

“Cotabato City has been participating in the observance of the Global Hand Washing Day ever since it started a few years ago. Congratulations to the city government employees and to all our partners for a very successful Global Handwashing Day celebration this year”, Dumama said.

Before the traditional hand washing, the members of the Local Council for the Protection of Children and other stakeholders pledged their commitment to ‘wash their hands with soap and water’ by affixing their signature on the ceremonial tarpaulin.

City Mayor Atty. Frances Cynthia Guiani-Sayadi earlier expressed her full support to the activity, stating that the city government is committed to upholding the rights of the youth to a healthy and sound environment that is conducive to their overall growth and success.

“The city government strongly supports the Global Handwashing Day as we are committed to promote cleanliness and proper hygiene to our youth for their overall well-being. I hope that everyone who participated in this activity will be made aware of the countless benefits that a simple hand washing can do”, the mayor said.

The hand washing activity was conducted at the main highway where there is normally heavy flow of traffic in the morning. To ensure the safety and security of the participants, the city’s Traffic Management Unit and the city police have worked together for the temporary rerouting schemes.

To date, almost all of the Day Care Centers in the 37 barangays of the city have functioning hand washing facilities for the children to use. Teachers are encouraged to promote regular hand washing routines to the pupils as part of their daily activities.
